Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary, Marlborough Region, New Zealand

Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary is situated an easy ten minute boat ride from Picton. The bush clad hills are home to some of NZ’s unique birdlife. A circular 2.7km walking track allows visitors to enjoy bird song, native bush and stunning views.

Situated at the head of Picton harbour in the Queen Charlotte Sound, Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary feels a million miles away from the town, yet only takes 10 mins by boat. A 2.7km circular walking track takes visitors through native NZ bush with stunning views across the inner Marlborough Sounds.

The Sanctuary is home to a variety of birds including tui, bellbird, kereru, fantail, South Island robin and little blue penguins. Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary is also a ‘creche’ for rowi kiwi, young chicks are placed on the island to learn how to live in the wild before returning home to Okarito on the South Island’s westcoast. New Zealand fur seal also regularly visit the Sanctuary over winter.
